Scholarships, Prizes and Fellowships

Jerome L. Joss Graduate Student Research Grant

Amount: Awards vary from year to year, based on number and quality of applications.

Support for graduate students who are formulating, researching, or writing dissertations or papers for publication in which the focus of inquiry is in a field of Jewish studies.

Leo & Lillian Gross Scholarship in Jewish Studies

Amount: Awards vary from year to year, based on number and quality of applications.

Support for full time undergraduate students with academic promise and financial need, who are actively pursing a major or minor in Jewish Studies, or whose academic interests and goals include the field of Jewish Studies.

Support for full time graduate students conducting research in an area of Jewish Studies and who demonstrates potential in their field.

Barbara D. & Lee Bearmon Jewish Ethical Leadership Award

Amount: $1000

Applicants shall be full time student in the College of Liberal Arts whose scholarship and work in the community are related to Jewish ethics. The student shall be in good academic standing with at least a B average. Application process includes a brief (2-4) page essay.

Goldenberg Prize for outstanding essays in Jewish Studies

Amount: $500

Graduate and Undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota are invited to submit a research paper in the field of Jewish Studies. The paper may investigate any time period, from antiquity to the present day.

Theresa and Nathan Berman Graduate Fellowship in Jewish Studies

Amount: Awards vary from year to year, based on number and quality of applications.

Support to full-time graduate students doing research in an area of Jewish Studies and who demonstrate potential in their field. Funding is for summer fellowships and may be extended to the following academic year.

Amos S. Deinard Memorial Graduate Fellowship in Modern Jewish History

Amount: Awards vary from year to year, based on the financial need and academic progress of the applicant.

Supporting full time graduate students in the Department of History with an interest in modern Jewish history. May be for partial payment of tuition and/or stipend.

2012 Award Recipients

The 2012 Goldenberg Prize for the best essays in Jewish Studies: were awarded to Seth Epstein, a graduate student in History and H. Carl Moerschbacher, an undergraduate in Religious Studies.

The 2012 Theresa and Nathan Berman Graduate Fellowship in Jewish Studies: was awarded to, Courtney Friesen, a graduate student in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies.

The 2012 Leo and Lillian Gross Scholarship in Jewish Studies: was awarded to James Shackelford, an undergraduate in Jewish Studies.

The 2012 Jerome Joss Graduate Student Research Grant was awarded to Juliette Brungs a graduate student in the department of German, Scandinavian and Dutch.
